Verlorene Cruise Liner 2020

Enchanted Capri

After the boom years in the cruise industry, the rather abrupt standstill came in 2020 as a result of the global corona pandemic. The longer this standstill lasted, the more the cruise lines came under financial pressure. Some therefore decided to sell their oldest ships. Some companies even had to file for bankruptcy, such as the British Cruise & Maritime Voyages and the Spanish-American Pullmantur Cruises. As a result, more cruise ships were scrapped in 2020 than they have been in a long time. While we had only reported a few scrapped cruise liners in the past few years (6 ships in 2018, 3 ships in 2017), it was a long list in 2020 – see above!

Furthermore, units that have been laid up for a long time already, such as the DELPHIN or the FUNCHAL, are meanwhile unlikely to have any chance of new missions.

Florenz an Bord

The COSTA FIRENZE is the fifth Vista class cruise ship in the Carnival group.

Florence on board

The interior of the COSTA FIRENZE is inspired by the Florentine Renaissance. The interior design is based on the Italian city of Florence. The Tuscan experience on board is to be supplemented by culinary offers based on Mediterranean cuisine.

In October 2021, the ship is to be transferred to East Asia in order to be available for the Asian market, for which she like iher sister ship COSTA VENEZIA, is tailored.

Der Klassiker FUNCHAL kommt erneut zur Versteigerung

MS FUNCHAL

The classic liner FUNCHAL is up for auction again

What will happen to the 60 year old ship?

After the British company Signature Living had bought the FUNCHAL (IMO 5124162) in December 2018, the cruise ship will be auctioned again in January 2021.

Signature Living initially planned to use the ship for party cruises between Great Britain and Ibiza. But these plans were given up. Instead, the FUNCHAL was to be towed to Liverpool to be converted into a floating hotel. However, nothing came of it either, Signature Living itself went into bankruptcy in 2020. In the meantime, FUNCHAL remained laid up in Lisbon.

The re-auction of the ship comes at an extremely unfavorable time, because in these times of the pandemic it is unlikely to find a new operator. In 2020, much younger ships were bought by scrapping companies.

The FUNCHAL is one of the oldest still existing passenger ships in the world. She was built in 1961 on Helsingør Skisbsværft og Maskinbyggeri in Denmark. With a gross tonnage of 9,563, it is 152.65 meters long.

Crypto Cruise Ship: Das Projekt Community Ship ist gescheitert

SATOSHI

Crypto Cruise Ship: The Community Ship project has failed

Another cruise ship being scrapped

The former PACIFIC DAWN, which was supposed to anchor off the coast of Panama under the name SATOSHI as a community ship, has failed. According to the operating company Ocean Builders, too many obstacles were put in the way of the project. For example, no P&I club could have been found that wanted to insure the ship at a realistic premium.

The cruise ship has now been sold for scrapping and is to be transferred to Alang in India.

With the PACIFIC DAWN, built in 1991 as REGAL PRINCESS (IMO 8521232), the sister ship of the KARNIKA, formerly CROWN PRINCESS (IMO 8521220), is now also being scrapped.

Film-Tipp: Let Them All Talk

Queen Mary 2 in the movie Let Them all Talk

Will CARNIVAL FASCINATION become a floating hotel?

Second career for Carnival Liner

After Carnival Cruise Line sold their CARNIVAL FASCINATION to a previously unnamed buyer a few months ago, it was assumed that this cruise ship would also go to the scrapping yard. But now there seems to be another use for the ship.

The new owner is said to be a company called Century Harmony Cruise Ltd. his. They are currently having a crew put together to operate the ship, presumably in order to then use her as a floating hotel, possibly in East Asia.

The CARNIVAL FASCINATION (IMO 9041253) was built in 1993/1994 at Kværner Masa Yards in Helsinki (today Helsinki Shipyard), is 260.80 meters long and measured with a gross tonnage of 70,538. She has a passenger capacity of about 2000.

Currently the CARNIVAL FASCINATION is laid up in Cadiz in Southern Spain.

Demolition work on the former AIDAblu has started

As reported, the Indian Jalesh Cruises had sold their only ship, the KARNIKA (IMO 8521220), for scrapping as a result of the corona pandemic. The ship, built in 1990 as CROWN PRINCESS, which in the course of her existence had also sailed under the names A’ROSA BLU, AIDAblu, OCEAN VILLAGE TWO and PACIFIC JEWEL, arrived in Alang, India a few days ago and was put on the beach for scrapping. The demolition work was started.

OCEAN DREAM on her way to the scrapping yard

The end for another cruise ship

The OEAN DREAM (IMO 7915096), last sailing for Peace Boat, is apparently on her journey to the scrapping yard. Although coming from Japan, the destination seems to be Aliaga in Turkey and not Alang in India, according to reports from the Turkish media.

History of the ship

The OCEAN DREAM was built in 1981/1982 on the Danish Aalborg Værft as TROPICALE for Carnival Cruise Lines. She was the first newbuilding for Carnival and the first ship to have the funnel shape typical for Carnival. The ship is 204.75 meters long and measured with a gross tonnage of 35,265. From 2001 to 2005 the Cruise Liner operated as COSTA TROPICALE for Costa Cruises, after which she was sold to P&O Australia, who used the employed her under the name PACIFIC STAR for cruises from Brisbane until 2008. When the cruise ship was taken over by the Spanish Pullmantur Cruises, the name was changed to OCEAN DREAM. This name was retained when the Japanese organization Peace Boat took over the liner in 2012.

The end

With the purchase of the SUN PRINCESS by Peace Boat this year, the OCEAN DREAM was no longer needed. Now she is apparently on her last voyage to the scrapping yard.

Vor 20 Jahren: Stapellauf der EUROPEAN VISION / MSC ARMONIA

European Vision

20 years ago: The EUROPEAN VISION / MSC ARMONIA was launched

On December 1, 2000, exactly 20 years ago, the EUROPEAN VISION (IMO 9210141) was launched at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France. She was built for Festival Cruises and after the bankruptcy of this company was taken over by MSC Cruises and renamed MSC ARMONIA. The cruise ship was the first in the Lirica class. The sister ship, the EUROPEAN STARS, was also taken over by MSC Cruises. She became the MSC SINFONIA (IMO 9210141).

With the MSC LIRICA and MSC OPERA, MSC Cruises had two more ships of this class built by the Chantiers de’l’Atlantique. These were the first newbuildings for MSC Cruises.

The MSC ARMONIA is currently the oldest ship in the MSC Cruises fleet. She was stretched in 2014 at Fincantieri in Palermo from 251 to 275 meters. With a gross tonnage of 65,542 (previously 56,625), she offers space for 2,579 passengers in 976 cabins.
