First steel cut for CARNIVAL JUBILEE in Papenburg

On March 18, 2022, Carnival Cruise Line had another reason to celebratetheir 50th anniversary: the first steel cut for the CARNIVAL JUBILEE was celebrated on the Meyer shipyard. The cruise ship, to be completed by fall 2023, is the third Excel class ship for Carnival Cruise Line. The two sister ships MARDI GRAS and CARNIVAL CELEBRATION, which are also powered by LNG, were built by Meyer Turku. The CARNIVAL JUBILEE is also the last unit of this series for the Carnival Group for the time being. According to the original plan, this should be built for AIDA Cruises.

Carnival Celebration Float out ceremony

Excellence class ship no. 7

As reported, the next LNG-powered cruise ship for Carnival Cruise Line floated out at Meyer Turku in Finland on February 11, 2022: the CARNIVAL CELEBRATION (IMO 9837456). The name of the ship was chosen because Carnival Cruise Line is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The floating out on the shipyard in Turku was duly celebrated with a cannon blast from a historic cannon.

After the MARDI GRAS, the CARNIVAL CELEBRATION is the second Excel class ship (also Excellence class or Helios class) for Carnival Cruise Line. The cruise line is also to receive a third ship of this class.

The Excellence class cruise ships already delivered by the Meyer yards are: AIDAnova, COSTA SMERALDA, IONA, MARDI GRAS, COSTA TOSCANA and AIDAcosma.

After the CARNIVAL CELEBRATION, two more ships of this class will follow: ARVIA and CARNIVAL JUBILEE. With the completion of this series, AIDA Cruises, Costa

Carnival Celebration Float out

Big Float Out Friday!

DISNEY WISH, CARNIVAL CELEBRATION and SH VEGA floated out

Friday February 11th was Big Float Out Friday. On this day, three new cruise ships were floated out : The Meyer shipyard celebrated two events of this kind with the docking out of the DISNEY WISH in Papenburg and the CARNIVAL CELEBRATION in Turku. And Finland underlined (also on February 11) its position in international cruise ship construction with another milestone: the float out of the SH VEGA for Swan Hellenic at the Helsinki Shipyard.

The DISNEY WISH will have space for around 4,000 passengers and is measured at around 144,000 gross tons. Delivery is scheduled for spring of this year.

The CARNIVAL CELEBRATION is measured at 185,000 gross tons. As the newest Excel class ship, she is the second LNG-powered cruise ship for Carnival Cruise Lines. The ship’s name was chosen to commemorate Carnival Cruise Lines‘ 50th anniversary this year.

The SH VEGA with a length of 113 meters and a measurement of approx. 10,500 gross tons is the second newbuild for Swan Hellenic. She is a 152-passenger expedition cruise ship. The SH VEGA is under construction on the Helsinki Shipyard.

Die alten Carnival Cruise Liner verschwinden…

Carnival Ecstasy

The old Carnival cruise liners are disappearing…

Another cruise liner on the way to the breakers

Carnival Cruise Line got rid of several of their older cruise ships since 2020 already, such as CARNIVAL FANTASY, CARNIVAL INSPIRATION, CARNIVAL FASCINATION and CARNIVAL IMAGINATION. Some of them went straight to the scrapyard.

Although the CARNIVAL FASCINATION was sold to an Asian company that originally wanted to continue using the cruise liner under the name CENTURY HARMONY, this ship is now on its last voyage, namely to Gadani in Pakistan, where it is to be scrapped.

Carnival Cruise Line has now announced that it will also sell the CARNIVAL ECSTASY and CARNIVAL SENSATION. Built in 1991 and 1993 respectively at Kværner Masa Yards in Helsinki, the cruise ships are currently the oldest in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. It will be interesting to see whether a buyer will be found who will use the ships again or whether the two units will go straight to the demolition sites as well

Ehemalige CARNIVAL FASCINATION wird in Kürze verschrottet

Carnival Fascination

CENTURY HARMONY is waiting for her final voyage

In October 2020, the CARNIVAL FASCINATION (IMO 9041253) was sold to an Asian company that supposedly wanted to convert the 261 meter long cruise ship into a floating hotel  or accommodation ship. The ship, which was renamed CENTURY HARMONY at the time, has recently been renamed Y HARMONY and is currently waiting in Colombo for her final voyage to Alang

Das Ende der Holiday-Klasse

MAGELLAN

Historische Bilder-Galerie

The end of the holiday class – Historical picture gallery

With the upcoming scrapping of the MAGELLAN, the last remaining of three holiday class cruise ships will also disappear. The three cruise ships of this class entered service in 1985, 1986 and 1987. While the HOLIDAY was constructed on the Aalborg Værft (Aalborg Yard) in Denmark, the JUBILEE and CELEBRATION were built at Kockums in Malmö. The ships were about 222 meters long and measured with gross tonnages between about 46,000 and 47,500. All three ships were or will be scrapped in Alang, India.

Above several historical pictures of these ships.

GRAND CELEBRATION in Alang eingetroffen

GRAND CELEBRATION

OCEAN DREAM beached

The OCEAN DREAM (IMO 7915096), built in 1980/81 in Aalborg, Denmark, as TROPICALE for Carnival Cruise Line, has meanwhile reached the beach at Alang in India. The demolition work on the almost 205 meter long cruise ship begins. With the takeover of the SUN PRINCESS (IMO 900259) by Peace Boat, the OCEAN DREAM was no longer needed. The SUN PRINCESS has meanwhile been renamed PACIFIC WORLD.

The OCEAN DREAM is just one of numerous cruise ships that were scrapped in 2020. You can read here which cruise liners were sold for scrapping in 2020.

Verlorene Cruise Liner 2020

Enchanted Capri

After the boom years in the cruise industry, the rather abrupt standstill came in 2020 as a result of the global corona pandemic. The longer this standstill lasted, the more the cruise lines came under financial pressure. Some therefore decided to sell their oldest ships. Some companies even had to file for bankruptcy, such as the British Cruise & Maritime Voyages and the Spanish-American Pullmantur Cruises. As a result, more cruise ships were scrapped in 2020 than they have been in a long time. While we had only reported a few scrapped cruise liners in the past few years (6 ships in 2018, 3 ships in 2017), it was a long list in 2020 – see above!

Furthermore, units that have been laid up for a long time already, such as the DELPHIN or the FUNCHAL, are meanwhile unlikely to have any chance of new missions.

MARDI GRAS – viele Bilder von Bord

MARDI GRAS

MARDI GRAS delivered

The Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku delivered the MARDI GRAS to Carnival Cruise Line on December 18th. Carnival Cruise Lines are adding their first LNG-powered cruise ship to their fleet.

The MARDI GRAS (IMO 9837444) is the fourth ship in the Helios class after the AIDAnova, COSTA SMERALDA and IONA. These ships are built alternately on the Papenburg and Turku shipyards. The MARDI GRAS is the first ship in this series for Carnival Cruise Line. She is 344 meters long and has space for around 6,300 passengers in 2,641 cabins.

A noticeable feature is the roller coaster on deck, according to Carnival the very first on a cruise ship.

Carnival Cruise Lines are expecting that their sister ship, the CARNIVAL CELEBRATION, will be delivered on time for the company’s 50th birthday in 2022.

Incidentally, the MARDI GRAS is the second ship with this name at Carnival. Carnival Cruise Lines’ very first ship was also called MARDI GRAS. She was built in 1961 as RMS EMPRESS OF CANADA.

Wird CARNIVAL FASCINATION ein Hotel-Schiff?

Carnival Fascination

Will CARNIVAL FASCINATION become a floating hotel?

Second career for Carnival Liner

After Carnival Cruise Line sold their CARNIVAL FASCINATION to a previously unnamed buyer a few months ago, it was assumed that this cruise ship would also go to the scrapping yard. But now there seems to be another use for the ship.

The new owner is said to be a company called Century Harmony Cruise Ltd. his. They are currently having a crew put together to operate the ship, presumably in order to then use her as a floating hotel, possibly in East Asia.

The CARNIVAL FASCINATION (IMO 9041253) was built in 1993/1994 at Kværner Masa Yards in Helsinki (today Helsinki Shipyard), is 260.80 meters long and measured with a gross tonnage of 70,538. She has a passenger capacity of about 2000.

Currently the CARNIVAL FASCINATION is laid up in Cadiz in Southern Spain.
