Die APOLLO wird endgültig verschrottet

MS APOLLO

Zweite Karriere in Kanada

Car ferry APOLLO will be finally scrapped

The end for a  classic car ferry built by Meyer shipyard

She is one of the last remaining „Papenburg Sisters“, a series of 9 car and passenger ferries that was built by Meyer in Papenburg for Scandinavian and Mexican clients in the 1970s.

50th anniversary reached

50 years ago, on April 29, 1070, the APOLLO (IMO 7006314) was delivered to Rederi AB Slite, which operated the ferry under the Viking Line brand. The ship also gained a certain fame under the names GELTING NORD, OLAU KENT, BENODET and CORBIERE

Second career in Canada

Since 2000 the APOLLO has been sailing under her initial name again for Canadian companies in Canadian waters. After several collisions with the ferry pier in 2019, the APOLLO finally had to be withdrawn from service.

Scrapping instead of sinking

Then the idea came up to sink the APOLLO in order to turn her into an artificial diving area. However, the costs of preparing for it got out of hand and the project had to be abandoned. Now the Dalhousie Marine Recyclers in New Brunswick bought the APOLLO for the symbolic price of 1 dollar to scrap her.

    Kind attention Torben Berger
Hi Torben. I trust you are safe and well.
Regarding your article „die-apollo-wird-endgueltig-verschrottet“ 29th October 2020, are you 100% sure „Apollo“ was scrapped? Only I’ve found a statement saying she was „sold to local miners in Canada in November 2020.“
    Best Wishes,
    Alan

      Hi Alan,

thanks, I’m fine. Hope, you too.
These are the news I found recently: „Wed Mar 03 09:57:36 CET 2021
The ‚Apollo‘ seems to be dismantled at a secret place. After the plans to create an artificial reef off Quebec have failed due to a lack of money after asbestos was found and corona delayed the work to strip the ship of anything environmentally harmful, the ‚Apollo‘ was then offered for scrapping for one dollar.
A recycling company bought the ferry with plans to scrap it in the town of Dalhousie. That was prevented by the city mayor prevented who feared pollution and demanded that the ferry was removed immediately before it – perhaps – sank in the port. Now, the ‚Apollo‘ was taken to a place by the scrap dealer which he will not disclose.

      Best regards, Torben
