Mehrere Kreuzfahrtschiffe kommen unter den Hammer

WORLD DREAM

Dream Cruises

Several cruise ships up for auction

What will happen to the ships of the Genting group? An overview

After the bankruptcy of Genting Hong Kong, it is still unclear what will happen to the the group’s cruise ships. An overview:

Crystal Cruises

There appear to be a number of interested parties for Crystal Cruises‘ ships, but also for the cruise line as a whole. and some manifested at the company as a whole. Allegedly, Crédit Agricole is entrusted with the search for buyers under the auspices of the liquidators employed..

The CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR is the most interesting ship in the Crystal Cruises fleet. However, industry experts question whether the construction price of 350 million euros can be achieved. With a passenger capacity of 200, the price would be $1.9 million per passenger berth, probably the highest in the entire industry. It is therefore doubtful whether a buyer will be found for that rate, especially since the well-known expedition cruise companies had only just stocked up on new tonnage in recent years.

Besides the CRYSTAL SYMPHONY (built in 1995) and CRYSTAL SERENITY (built in 2003), five river cruise ships are also available.

Star Cruises

Available are: STAR PISCES (built in 1990), SUPERSTAR GEMINI (built in 1992) and SUPERSTAR AQUARIUS (built in 1993). In view of the age of the ships, it must be expected that they will only achieve scrap prices when sold, which has already been shown by various ships of a similar age in recent months, especially since the prices paid by the scrapping yards are comparatively high. The STAR PISCES, which has been used for casino cruises from Hong Kong in recent years, is unlikely to be on the level of a cruise ship anyway. Incidentally, Star Cruises had itself acquired this ship from an insolvency estate at an auction, namely after the insolvency of the Swedish Rederi AB Slite, then a partner of Viking Line.

Dream Cruises

Genting HK was particularly committed to the reorganization and continuation of its Dream Cruises brand, consisting of WORLD DREAM (built in 2017), GENTING DREAM (built in 2016) and EXPLORER DREAM (built in 1999), all three constructed on Meyer shipyard, Papenburg. The EXPLORER DREAM, the oldest of the Dream ships, is likely to come up for auction and could be put back into service by a buyer.

The situation is different with the GENTING DREAM: The cruise ship had already been sold to a consortium of several Chinese banks at the beginning of 2020 and was leased by Genting. It is therefore up to the banks to find either a new lessee or a buyer for the ship.

The WORLD DREAM is the youngest ship in the Dream Cruises fleet. Here it will also be exciting to see what price can be achieved at an auction, the price will probably be well below the original construction costs. Here, too, the problem is that the potential cruise lines have secured enough ships with newbuilding orders in recent years. The big players in the industry are now also showing greater interest in ships with innovative propulsion technologies.

WORLD DREAM is currently in Singapore, GENTING DREAM in Hong Kong and EXPLORER DREAM in Port Klang, Malaysia.

And then there is the unfinished GLOBAL DREAM, which is on the shipyard in Wismar, Germany. A buyer is still being sought for her as well.
