Hurtigruten stellen Betrieb weitgehend ein

Hurtigruten - Trollfjord

Hurtigruten suspending operations

Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten is affected by the Corona virus as well. The company has decided to gradually put its expedition cruise ships on the pier, but also to largely shut down coastal traffic on the Norwegian coast. In coordination with the Norwegian government, two ships will still serve some ports in Norway to bring much-needed supplies to the communities on the Norwegian coast. However, the regular timetable is no longer served by these ships either.

These measures are also a serious cut for Hurtigruten, which also means that around 2,800 employees are temporarily out of work.

CMV: Schiff-zu-Schiff-Passagier-Transfer auf hoher See!

CMV Passagier-Tausch auf hoher See

CMV: ship-to-ship passenger transfer on the high seas!

Corona crisis leads to extraordinary passenger exchange on the open sea

The corona crisis is leading to more and more amazing actions. What to do if cruise ships can no longer find a port of call to disembark passengers? What to do if you can no longer take passengers home by plane because entry stops or cut flight connections prevent this? Two ships of the British Cruise & Maritime Voyages also got into this situation: the COLUMBUS, which was on a four-month trip around the world, and the VASCO DA GAMA on a voyage from Fremantle, Asutralia, via Singapore and Suez to Tilbury.
The solution: You bring the passengers to their home countries with the ship they are on. But mostly passengers from different continents are on board. On the COLUMBUS and the VASCO DA GAMA, the majority were British, Australians and New Zealanders. Everyone should be brought home, but in two very different directions!
After unsuccessful attempts to obtain call permits in a port in Southeast Asia, the cruise company has recently decided to launch an unprecedented passenger exchange campaign on the high seas: New Zealanders and Australians onto the VASCO DA GAMA and British onto the COLUMBUS. For this, 239 passengers had to change ships. This happened at sea 12 nautical miles from the Thai island of Phuket. The passengers were transferred from ship to ship in tender boats. In addition, there were around 500 pieces of luggage that were transferred between the ships.
The VASCO DA GAMA is now returning to Australia with 952 passengers including 907 Australians and New Zealanders, and the COLUMBUS is on her way back to Great Britain with 907 passengers including 602 Brits.

Ems-Überführung der IONA – ein Anachronismus

IONA

IONA’s river Ems transit – an anachronism

The IONA (IMO 9826548) is the third Helios class ship and, thanks to its LNG propulsion, is one of the most modern ships in the global cruise fleet. Nevertheless, the IONA is somehow out of time. If the predecessor ships of the Helios class, the AIDAnova (IMO 9781865) and the COSTA SMERALDA (IMO 9781889) were completed with a considerable delay, the Meyer shipyard with the IONA is obviously back on schedule to some extent. But what is it still worth in these times? P&O, the British cruise company for which the IONA is being built, would probably not have much of an objection at the moment if their new flagship is finished a little later than planned. Because of the corona crisis, almost all cruise ships worldwide are somewhere without employment at the pier or on anchorage.

Almost as if nothing had happened, the IONA is gliding peacefully down the river Ems from the Meyer shipyard towards the North Sea – into a world that is no longer the same as a few weeks ago, a world that just isn’t waiting on a new cruise ship for 6,000 passengers – no matter how environmentally friendly and modern the ship is.

The IONA is already somehow affected by the corona virus, because there were at least one infected employee at the Meyer shipyard. That is why IONA does not have a crew of around 2,000 people and hundreds of technicians and workers on board, as planned, on the one hand to further advance the interior work and on the other hand to test the work processes on board. Instead, the number of people on board has been significantly reduced, and crowded work should be avoided. Anyone who came on board had to have the temperature measured beforehand. That doesn’t give 100% security either.

We would not like to withhold a few pictures of the IONA on the Ems river. – photos taken by a local photographer

Bau-Stopp bei Fincantieri

Fincantieri

Suspended work at Fincantieri

The Italian shipyard Fincantieri stops working at all of its locations in Italy. The measure is initially limited to 14 days and is due to the dramatic situation associated with the spread of corona virus in Italy. By stopping work, the health of the employees of the shipyard and the suppliers is taken into account, according to the press release from Fincantieri.

Port Miami verzichtet auf Liegeplatz-Gebühren

Port of Miami

Port Miami waiving berth fees

Given the suspension of cruise operations from US ports, the port of Miami has announced that it will waive the berth fees. This applies to all cruise ships that have Miami as their base port and will moor there in the next few weeks. The offer is initially valid for the next 30 days, subject to berth availability. The period of validity can be adjusted if necessary.

Überblick: Diese Cruise Lines stellen Betrieb vorübergehend ein

Kreuzfahrtschiffe

List of suspended cruise lines with compensation and future cruise credits

The number of rejected cruise ships – with or without corona virus cases on board – has grown steadily. In addition, various ports temporarily prohibit all cruise ships from calling. Against this background, regulated operation of cruise ships hardly seems possible. The first cruise lines draw drastic consequences from this and temporarily cease operating their ships. A first overview:

Princess Cruises suspending all cruises for 60 days

Princess Cruises is the first major cruise company to cancel all cruises for 2 months due to the corona crisis. This drastic measure is done on a voluntary basis. It affects all 18 Princess Cruises ships worldwide. Guests booked on the affected cruises could either transfer their deposited money to a later cruise with Princess Cruises and will receive a bonus in addition, alternatively they will be refunded 100% of the cruise price.
With the DIAMOND PRINCESS and the GRAND PRINCESS, Princess Cruises is one of the cruise lines that hit the corona crisis hardest. All of the passengers were held on board on both of the cruise ships after some of them became infected with the Corona virus. In recent weeks, however, more and more cruise ships have been refused entry to certain ports or passengers have been refused to go ashore.
It remains to be seen whether other cruise lines will follow the example of Princess Cruises.

Neue Pläne für SS UNITED STATES als Hotelschiff – Ist das die Rettung?

SS United States

New plans for SS UNITED STATES as a floating hotel – is that her salvation?

According to its own information, RXR Realty, a real estate company based in New York City, is reviewing a renovation and conversion of the legendary SS UNITED STATES into a floating hotel. CEO Scott Rechler is therefore already looking for a suitable berth in New York, San Francisco or in another large port city in the USA.
According to Rechler, more and more tourists and travelers are no longer just looking for ordinary hotel rooms, but increasingly prefer unusual and unconventional accommodations. A ship, and a classic liner at that, would be an obvious choice. In addition, the SS UNITED STATES would not only be an exceptional hotel, but an attraction in itself. According to Rechler, the SS UNITED STATES will also house a restaurant and a museum.
Rechler puts this project at around $ 500 million. RXR already has relevant experience in converting old and historical buildings into apartments and shops.
The SS UNITED STATES, once the pride of the Americans, is still in the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is rusting away. It was built in 1952 and decommissioned in 1969. Means the liner has been decommissioned for more than 50 years already. All previous ideas and attempts to rescue the ship have fizzled out due to the expected costs.

Vestland Classic taking over former RAGNVALD JARL

SJØKURS saved from scrapping

Norway based Sørlandet Seilende Skoleskibs had already announced last year that they would sell their SJØKURS used as a training ship. The ship is the former Hurtigruten liner RAGNVALD JARL, built in 1956 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskab. In 1995 RAGNVALD JARL left the Hurtigruten service. Subsequently, she sailed for Rogaland Sjøaspirantskole as GANN.

With the decision announced in 2019 by the shipping company to get rid of the ship, it had to be expected that the classic liner would be scrapped. The ship now escapes this fate: According to reports, the company Vestland Classic, which already operates the NORDSTJERNEN, bought the classic ship and wants to have it renovated in Gdansk.

Hier entsteht Hamburgs neues Cruise Terminal Baakenhöft

Hamburg’s new Baakenhöft cruise terminal

Opening in May 2020

Hamburg gets a new cruise center, though only “temporarily” for 10 years. The Baakenhöft Cruise Center is currently under construction on the Baakenhafen Island, the new district under construction in Hamburg’s HafenCity. This cruise terminal, not far from Lighthouse Zero, serves as an alternative terminal for the well-known cruise terminal Hafencity , which in turn is only a provisional in southern Überseequartier (Overseas Quarter). The Hafencity cruise terminal is now being rebuilt, and during this time cruise ships can use the new temporary Cruise Center Baakenhöft. But even after the completion of the new Hafencity cruise terminal, an additional berth will still be available at Baakenhöft – it is planned until around 2030.

From May 2020, the first cruise liners should be able to moor at Baakenhöft. In times of high occupancy, e.g. at the port birthday, the quay facility at Baakenhöft was already used for cruise ships. The new Hafencity cruise terminal, on the other hand, should be completed by 2022. The terminal building at Baakenhöft will have a floor area of around 1,000 square meters.

Incidentally, there is an interesting reason why the striking Baakenhöft in Hamburg’s Hafencity was still available and was not otherwise built on: In the event that one day the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Bremen merged to form a so-called northern state , the parliament and government building was to be built there, so that the area was still reserved for it. In the meantime, after the use as a cruise terminal, the construction of a house of science on the Baakenhöft is also being considered.

Mit Salamis Cruise Lines durch die Ägäis

Salamis Filoxenia

Since 2009 it has been the SALAMIS FILOXENIA, which is also the only cruise ship at Salamis. It is a ship built in 1975 as a car ferry, constructed by Wärtsilä in Turku (now Meyer Turku) for Black Sea Shipping Co. The first name of the ship was GRUZIYA. She had space for 250 cars.
In 1992 the GRUZIYA was converted into a cruise ship and subsequently sailed under various names, including ODESSA SKY and VAN GOGH. As SALAMIS FILOXENIA (IMO 7359400), the ship has been in service for Salamis Cruise Lines since 2009. With a gross tonnage of 15,402 and a length of 156.27 meters, 255 passenger cabins are available. The SALAMIS FILOXENIA is one of the smallest on the cruise market.
Salamis Cruise Lines offer cruises in the Aegean from short trips to 9-day trips. The focus is on the eastern Aegean. The port of departure is always Limassol in Cyprus. Salamis Cruise Lines impress with their extraordinary destinations away from the well-known cruise ports in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. For example, the small but charming islands of Kastelorizo and Symi are frequently visited, but Corfu, Rhodes and Chios are also on the program. Every now and then short trips to Lebanon or the Holy Land are offered.
Anyone who loves a beautiful old ship and is enthusiastic about extraordinary destinations in the Aegean should take a closer look at this company.
