OCEAN MAJESTY on the North Sea Canal

Uncertain Future for 60-Year-Old Passenger Ship

The OCEAN MAJESTY, one of the world’s oldest cruise ships, will leave her berth in Velsen (opposite Ijmuiden, photo below) on the North Sea Canal in the Netherlands in August. She has served as a floating shelter for asylum seekers since mid-2023. Authorities are currently seeking a smaller, more cost-effective replacement for the ship.

It is currently unknown what will become of the OCEAN MAJESTY.

The ship was built in 1965 as the Spanish car ferry JUAN MARCH (IMO 6602898) at the Union Naval de Levante shipyard in Valencia. She was converted into a cruise ship in 1989. Since then, She has sailed under various names. The OCEAN MAJESTY is 135.30 meters long and has a gross tonnage of 10,417 tons.
