RCGS RESOLUTE (ex HANSEATIC) im Pech

Die RCGS RESOLUTE ex HANSEATIC hatte schon Wochen vor der Corona-Krise keine Passagiere mehr an Bord, weil ihr Charterer One Ocean Expeditions insolvent gegangen war.

Vor kurzem hatte das kleine Expeditions-Kreuzfahrtschiff Buenos Aires, wo sie über Wochen gelegen hatte, verlassen und war Richtung Karibik gefahren.

Am frühen Morgen des 30. März ist es zu einer folgenschweren Kollision mit dem Patrouillen-Boot Naiguatá – GC 23 der Küstenwache Venezuelas gekommen, bei der das Patrouillen-Boot sank. Die venezolanischen Besatzungsmitglieder wurden gerettet.

Seitens der Schiffsführung der RCGS Resolute wurden die Umstände wie folgt geschildert:

Die RCGS RESOLUTE befand sich in internationalen Gewässern, etwa 13,3 Seemeilen von Isla de Tortuga entfernt, mit 32 Besatzungsmitgliedern an Bord. Am Schiff, unterwegs Richtung Willemstad, Curaçao, wurden routine-mäßige Motorwartungen durchgeführt.

Kurz nach Mitternacht näherte sich ein bewaffnetes venezolanischen Marineschiff dem Kreuzfahrtschiff.  Per Funk wurde die RCGS RESOLUTE nach dem Grund für den Aufenthalt an der Stelle gefragt und erhielt den Befehl, dem Marine-Boot nach Puerto Moreno auf der Isla de Margarita zu folgen. Da die RCGS RESOLUTE zu diesem Zeitpunkt in internationalen Gewässern fuhr, wollte der Kapitän zunächst Rücksprache mit der Eigner-Gesellschaft halten.

Während der Kapitän mit der Zentrale in Kontakt stand, wurden seitens des Küstenwach-Boots Schüsse abgefeuert, und kurz darauf näherte sich das Marineschiff der Steuerbordseite und kollidierte absichtlich mit der RCGS RESOLUTE. Das Marineschiff rammte weiterhin den den Bug auf der Steuerbord-Seite, um das Schiff in Richtung der venezolanischen Hoheitsgewässer zu drehen.

Während die RCGS RESOLUTE geringfügige Schäden erlitt, die die Seetüchtigkeit des Schiffes nicht beeinträchtigten, erlitt das Marineboot beim Kontakt mit dem eisverstärkten Wulstbug des Expeditionskreuzfahrtschiffes RCGS RESOLUTE schwere Schäden hatte Wassereinbruch.

Die RCGS RESOLUTE war jederzeit einsatzbereit und blieb über eine Stunde in der Nähe des Geschehens. Die Schiffsführung wandte sich an das Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Curaçao. Dies ist eine internationale Organisation, die alle maritimen Notfälle in der Region überwacht. Alle Versuche, die an Bord des Marineschiffs befindlichen Personen zu kontaktieren, blieben unbeantwortet.

Erst nachdem das MRCC die Order gegeben hatte, die Fahrt fortzusetzen, und nachem festgestellt worden war, dass keine weitere Unterstützung erforderlich war, fuhr die RCGS RESOLUTE, die derzeit weiter in Richtung Curaçao. Es soll nun eine vollständige Untersuchung der Umstände des Vorfalls geben.

Venezuelan patrol boat sunk after collision

The RCGS RESOLUTE ex HANSEATIC had no passengers on board already weeks before the Corona crisis because its charterer One Ocean Expeditions had gone bankrupt.

Recently the small expedition cruise ship had left Buenos Aires, where it had been for weeks, and headed for the Caribbean.

In the early morning of March 30, a serious collision with the patrol boat Naiguatá – GC 23 of the Venezuelan coast guard occurred, causing the patrol boat to sink. The Venezuelan crew members were saved.

The circumstances of the RCGS Resolute ship management were described as follows:

The RCGS RESOLUTE was in international waters, approximately 13.3 nautical miles from Isla de Tortuga, with 32 crew members on board. Routine engine maintenance was carried out on the ship, en route to Willemstad, Curaçao.

Shortly after midnight, an armed Venezuelan naval ship approached the cruise ship. The RCGS RESOLUTE was asked by radio about the reason for the stay at the site and was ordered to follow the marine boat to Puerto Moreno on the Isla de Margarita. As the RCGS RESOLUTE was sailing in international waters at this point, the captain initially wanted to consult the owner company.

Gun shots were fired from the Coast Guard boat while the captain was in contact with his headquarters, and shortly afterwards the naval ship approached the starboard side and collided by purpose with the RCGS RESOLUTE. The naval ship continued to ram the bow on the starboard side to turn the ship towards the Venezuelan territorial waters.

While the RCGS RESOLUTE suffered minor damage that did not affect the ship’s seaworthiness, the marine boat suffered severe damage from contact with the ice-strengthened bulbous bow of the expedition cruise ship RCGS RESOLUTE.

The RCGS RESOLUTE was ready to support at any time and stayed close to the scene for over an hour. The ship’s command turned to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Curaçao. This is an international organization that oversees all maritime emergencies in the region. All attempts to contact the people on board the naval ship remained unanswered.

It was only after the MRCC had given the order to continue the journey and after it was determined that no further assistance was required, that the RCGS RESOLUTE continued her voyage towards Curaçao. There will now be a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
