Die DELPHIN wird verschrottet

Kreuzfahrtschiff DELPHIN

Cruise Ship DELPHIN to be scrapped

The DELPHIN, which has been laid up in Rijeka, Croatia for several years, was recently sold at an auction by a Turkish scrapping company and will probably be scrapped in Aliaga, Turkey.

The DELPHIN (IMO 7347536) was built in 1974 by OY Wärtsilä in Turku, Finland as the first of five Belorussiya class ships. The ships of the Belorussiya class were originally built as ferries and were later converted to pure cruise vessels.

The last ships of this class

The BELORUSSIYA, converted into a cruise ship in 1986 and converted again in 1993, was renamed DELPHIN in 1996 and was used on the German cruise market for many years. Besides the SALAMIS FILOXENIA ex GRUZIYA, the DELPHIN is the last remaining ship of the Belorussiya class. But the SALAMIS FILOXENIA will probably also be scrapped soon. Another sister ship, the ENCHANTED CAPRI ex AZERBAIZHAN, ran aground on the Mexican coast in November 2020 and is rotting away there.

Kreuzfahrtschiff SALAMIS FILOXENIA verkauft

SALAMIS FILOXENIA

Cruise ship SALAMIS FILOXENIA sold

The End for another Belorussiya-class ship ?

The Cyprus-based Salamis Group have sold their SALAMIS FILOXENIA (IMO 7359400), which has been laid up in Limassol for about 2 years, to a company called Prime Spot Ship Trading LLC in the United Arab Emirates. This transaction leaves little hope for the future of the cruise ship. This was built in 1975 by OY Wärtsilä in Turku (today Meyer Turku) as cruise ferry GRUZIYA for the Black Sea Shipping Co., Odessa. She was the second ship of the Belorussiya class. With a length of 156.27 meters and a measurement of 15,402 gross tons, she has a passenger capacity of more than 800 passengers. In her early years, the ship also had space for 250 cars.

After GRUZIYA, the names of the ship were ODESSA SKY, CLUB CRUISE I, CLUB I, VAN GOGH and finally SALAMIS FILOXENIA. The names refer to the checkered history of the ship. Salamis Cruise Lines has been using the ship for cruises in the eastern Mediterranean since 2011.

Of the five structurally identical ships of the Belorussiya class, in addition to the SALAMIS FILOXENIA currently only the DELPHIN ex BELORUSSIYA exists. Just over a year ago, the ENCHANTED CAPRI ex AZERBAIZHAN ran aground in Mexico and is now rotting on Alvarado Beach. Here are some shots of that scenery.

SUPERSTAR LIBRA soll verschrottet werden

Superstar Libra

SUPERSTAR LIBRA is about to be scrapped

The SUPERSTAR LIBRA, built in 1987/88 as SEAWARD (IMO 8612134) near Wärtsilä in Turku, will probably be brought to the scrapping yard shortly.

The ship, 216 meters long and measured at approx. 42,000 gross tons, was built for Kloster Cruises at the time and was renamed NORWEGIAN SEA in 1997 when she was transferred to the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. In 2005 the cruise liner was taken over by the Star Cruises, part oft he Genting group, and renamed SUPERSTAR LIBRA.

In 2018, Genting took the liner to Wismar, where it was first converted and from then on served as an accommodation ship for shipyard workers.

Now the SUPERSTAR LIBRA is being prepared for another voyage. According to reports, this will lead to a Turkish scrapping yard.

ENCHANTED CAPRI wird verschrottet

Belorussiya class ship

ENCHANTED CAPRI to be scrapped

The end for former Belorussiya class cruise liner

She was one of five sister ships of the Belorussiya class: the ENCHANTED CAPRI (IMO 7359474). For almost 20 years, the passenger ship was no longer in use as a cruise liner, but served as accommodation  ship for a Mexican company for workers on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Now the liner is to be scrapped in Coatzacoalcos.

The ship was built in 1975/76 by Wärtsilä Turku shipyard as Cruise Ferry AZERBAYDZHAN for the Black Sea Shipping Company. Under the names ARKADYA, ISLAND HOLIDAY and ENCHANTED CAPRI she later sailed as a cruise ship, last for Commodore Cruise Lines, which went bankrupt in 2001.

The SALAMIS FILOXENIA (ex GRUZIYA, IMO 7359400)  is one of the remaining Belorussiya class ships that have survived;  she was still sailing as a cruise ship until the outbreak of the pandemic. The DELPHIN ex BELORUSSIYA (IMO 7347536) also still exists, but after years of lay-up she will hardly have a future.

Song of Norway

SONG OF NORWAY vor 50 Jahren abgeliefert

In den Hauptrollen spielen u.a.
