60 years ago: maiden voyage of SS LEONARDO DA VINCI

Sixty years ago, on June 30, 1960, the LEONARDO DA VINCI sailed for her maiden voyage. The voyage led from Genoa via Cannes and Naples to New York.

The ship built on the Cantieri Navali di Sestri Ponente in Genoa was the replacement ship for the ANDREA DORIA of the Italian Line, which sank after a collision in 1956. The LEONARDO DA VINCI (IMO 5206518) was an extended and more modern version of the ANDREA DORIA. SS LEONARDO DA VINCI was 233.90 meters long and measured with 33,340 gross tons. As a three-class ship, it had space for a total of 1,326 passengers.

The liner was used for transatlantic crossings and cruises. After the new flagships of the Italian Line, the MICHELANGELO and RAFFAELLO, went into service, the LEONARDO DA VINCI was then used almost exclusively for cruises in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and North and South America.

In 1976 the LEONARDO DA VINCI was decommissioned. The two flagships of the company MICHELANGELO and RAFFAELLO had been decommissioned already the year before. LEONARDO DA VINCI was laid up in La Spezia. After a four days lasting fire on board in July 1980, the liner was sold for scrapping. The demolition took place on the Cantieri Navali Lotti in La Spezia.
