Vor 50 Jahren: SS UNITED STATES außer Dienst

SS UNITED STATES

The vessel built at Newport News Shipbuilding has remained in service for a about 17 years. In the end, SS UNITED STATES was no longer profitable. Air travel had become cheaper and more popular. On November 14, 1969, exactly 50 years ago, the proud liner was decommissioned.

Since then, there have been several attempts to reuse the ship. Et al Norwegian Cruise Lines and Crystal Cruises were among the interested parties. Ultimately, however, a restoration always proved to be too time-consuming and costly.
