Vor 60 Jahren: MS FRITZ HECKERT in Dienst gestellt.

MS Fritz Heckert

60 years ago: MS FRITZ HECKERT put into service.

The FRITZ HECKERT was a so-called FDGB vacation ship of the GDR. The cruise ship was built from 1959 to 1961 at Mathias Thesen Yard in Wismar, Germany. On April 15, 1961, 60 years ago, the FRITZ HECKERT was put into service, on May 1, 1961, she set sail for her maiden voyage to the Baltic States.

The ship was 141.17 meters long and had a passenger capacity of 369. The FRITZ HECKERT was constructed too softly, however, and cracks kept coming up on some windows. In addition, the ship was subject to heavy rolling movements. Therefore, the FRITZ HECKERT ws kept in service for only about 11 years. Then she served as a floating accomodation for shipyard workers in Stralsun. In 1991 the ship was converted into a floating hotel on behalf of a Hamburg based company. From then on, the ship was moored in the United Arab Emirates under the name GULF FANTASY. She was finally scrapped in Mumbai in 1999.
