Vor 60 Jahren: Stapellauf und Taufe der SS FRANCE
Einst war sie der stolz der Franzosen: der Transatlantik-Liner FRANCE (IMO 5119143) der Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Vor genau 60 Jahren, am 11. Mai 1960, fand auf den Chantiers de l’Atlantique der Stapellauf statt. Am selben Tag wurde das Schiff auch getauft, nämlich von Yvonne de Gaulle, Gattin des französischen Staatspräsidenten.
Bei Fertigstellung im November 1961 war die FRANCE mit 66.343 gross tons vermessen. Sie war 315,53 Meter lang und hatte Platz für ca. 2.000 Passagiere, damals noch aufgeteilt in erste Klasse und Touristenklasse. Anfang 1962 fand die Jungfernfahrt nach New York statt. Mit an Bord: der französische Staatspräsident Charles de Gaulle.
Der Siegeszug der Passagierflugzeuge sowie die Ölkrise Anfang der 1970er-Jahre machten den Betrieb des Liners jedoch unwirtschaftlich und führten letztlich zu Außerdienststellung im Jahre 1974. Sogar eine letzte Abschiedskreuzfahrt wurde gestrichen.
1979 fand sich mit dem Norweger Knut Kloster ein Käufer für das Schiff. Nach einem umfassenden Umbau kam es im Mai 1980 als NORWAY für Norwegian Caribbean Line wieder in Fahrt. Die NORWAY entwickelte sich zu einem bei den Passagieren beliebten Schiff.
Die NORWAY fuhr viele Jahre für die später in Norwegian Cruise Line umgebaute Gesellschaft. Doch der Cruise Liner kam in die Jahre und die inzwischen von Star Cruises übernommene Norwegian Cruise Line entschied sich 2005 zum Verkauf des Liners zur Verschrottung. Eine Rettung des Schiffs durch anderweitige Nutzung wurde nicht mehr erreicht. Ab 2006 erfolgte die Verschrottung in Alang.

Once she was the pride of the French: the Transatlantic Liner FRANCE (IMO 5119143), built for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Exactly 60 years ago, on May 11, 1960, she was launched on the Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The ship was christened on the same day by Yvonne de Gaulle, wife of the French President.
When completed in November 1961, the FRANCE was measured at 66,343 gross tons. She was 315.53 meters long and had space for about 2,000 passengers, at that time still divided into first class and tourist class. In early 1962, the maiden voyage to New York took place. Also on board: French President Charles de Gaulle.
The triumph of passenger aircraft and the oil crisis in the early 1970s, however, made the operation of the liner uneconomical and ultimately led to her being decommissioned in 1974. Even a last farewell cruise was canceled.
In 1979 the Norwegian Knut Kloster was a buyer for the ship. After extensive renovations, she returned to service as NORWAY for Norwegian Caribbean Line in May 1980. The NORWAY developed into a popular ship among passengers.
NORWAY sailed for many years for the company that was later converted into Norwegian Cruise Line. However, the cruise liner was getting on in years and Norwegian Cruise Line, which has meanwhile been taken over by Star Cruises, decided in 2005 to sell the liner for scrapping. Rescue of the ship for other purpose was no longer achieved. As from 2006 the ship was scrapped at Alang.
