BLUE DREAM MELODY ex AIDAvita auf dem Weg nach China

BLUE DREAM MELODY

Blue Dream Cruises Flotte: Zwei in Deutschland gebaute Schiffe gleichen Alters

Seit 24.

Blue Dream Cruises fleet: now 2 ships of the same age built in Germany

The BLUE DREAM MELODY is on her journey to China since January 24, 2024. The cruise ship is the former AIDAvita (IMO 9221554), built by Aker MTW in Wismar until 2002. The ship was last registered for Beta Marine and was laid up in Tallinn, Estonia. The 202.85 meter long cruise liner will complement the Chinese Blue Dream Cruises fleet.

To date, Blue Dream Cruises has only operated a single cruise ship, the BLUE DREAM STAR (IMO 9183518). Incidentally, the BLUE DREAM STAR was also built in Germany until 2002, namely at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg as the OLYMPIA EXPLORER for Royal Olympic Cruises. She was handed over to the shipping company on April 25, 2002, exactly 5 days before the AIDAvita was handed over to her owners in Wismar. The BLUE DREAM STAR ex OLYMPIA EXPLORER is the last passenger ship built by Blohm + Voss to date.

Second career in sight for the popular AIDA cruise liner?

According to reports, the AVITAK (ex AIDAvita, IMO 9221554), which has been laid up in Tallinn, Estonia for some time and registered for Beta Marine in the meantime, will be sold to the Chinese company Blue Dream Cruises. The ship could be used for cruises again under the name BLUE DREAM MELODY. This means that the third AIDA ship of the first generation would also have found a new use.

AIDAaura acquired by Celestyal Cruises and renamed CELESTYAL DISCOVERY

The Cypriot cruise company Celestyal Cruises takes over the AIDAaura (IMO 9221566) from AIDA Cruises. The cruise ship will be renamed CELESTYAL DISCOVERY and will probably replace the CELESTYAL OLYMPIA.

AIDA had previously planned to sell the cruise ship to Miray Cruises for a three-year round-the-world cruise, but this failed due to the buyer’s lack of financial resources.

AIDAaura: Verkauf geplatzt

AIDAaura

November in Istanbul beginnen.

AIDAaura: sale failed

Failed plans for a three-year cruise

In the past few weeks and months there have been repeated reports about the impending sale of the AIDAaura (IMO 9221566) to the Turkish Miray Cruises, which wanted to employ the ship under the new name LARA for their Life at Sea brand. Accordingly, the cruise ship should have beeen used by the potential new owner for a three-year voyage around the world. Interested parties could have rented a cabin for three years for a six-figure US dollar amount. The plan was to visit almost 400 ports in 140 countries during this voyage.

Original schedule from handover

The official handover of the ship was scheduled for September 29th, the conversion of the ship for Life at Sea was to take place in Rotterdam, and the world trip was scheduled to start in Istanbul on November 1st. That would have been an ambitious schedule. However, the handover has not yet taken place. As has now been announced, the sale has probably fallen through. The first crew members from Life at Sea had already arrived on board, but have now probably left the ship again.

According to reports, the buyer has defaulted on payments and may have only paid the deposit to date.

AIDA must now quickly find a solution for the whereabouts of the ship.

Whereabouts of the ships of the first AIDA generation

Since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, AIDA has begun to retire the three oldest units in the fleet, the AIDAcara, the AIDAvita and now the AIDAaura. The AIDAcara (IMO 9112789) had already been sold in 2021 and is now in use in the Black Sea for Russian owners under the name ASTORIA GRANDE. The AIDAvita (IMO 9221554) is still laid up in Tallinn and has already been renamed AVITAK.

AIDAmira wird Wohnschiff für Flüchtlinge

AIDAmira

The former AIDAmira (IMO 9172777), purchased by the British Ambassador Cruise Line in January 2022 and subsequently renamed AMBITION, will be chartered to the Scottish Government. She will then serve as a residential ship for refugees from Ukraine.

From the beginning of September, the AMBITION will be in Scotland as a accomodation ship for 6 months. After that, she will go into dry dock for an overhaul. According to Ambassador Cruise Line, the restart as a cruise ship has been postponed to mid-May 2023.

The cruise ship was built in 1999 by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France, as MISTRAL for the Greek Festival Cruises. She is 216 meters long and has a gross tonnage of 48,123.

AIDAcosma – heute Erstanlauf in Hamburg

AIDAcosma

AIDAcosma – Maiden call in Hamburg

Today, Friday, February 25, 2022, the AIDAcosma, the youngest member of the AIDA fleet, is expected to make her maiden call in Hamburg.

The AIDAcosma (IMO 9781877) was handed over to AIDA in December 2021 by the Meyer shipyard, Papenburg. As the sixth Helios class ship (also Excellence class or Excel class), like her sister ship AIDAnova, she has an innovative LNG propulsion system. The cruise giant is scheduled to embark on its first-ever fare-paying cruise on February 26. The opening season with Hamburg as base port will culminate with the christening in the Hanseatic city on April 9th. Godmother will be Kristina Vogel, a former cyclist and two-time Olympic champion

AIDAmira to be taken over by Ambassador Cruise Line: AMBITION

UK based Ambassador Cruise Line is taking over the AIDAmira (IMO 9172777) from AIDA Cruises, in order to deploy her from 2023 under the name AMBITION. With that cruise ship for 1200 passengers in 714 cabins, Ambassador Cruise Line primarily wants to appeal to the British 50+ audience. Cruises are offered from British ports, so-called no-fly sailings, bookable from the second quarter of 2022.

The AMBITION is already the second cruise ship for Ambassador Cruise Line, the newcomer to the cruise market. Some time ago, the cruise line had already acquired the former SATOSHI (IMO 8521232) ex PACIFIC DAWN ex REGAL PRINCESS, in order to bring her back into service as AMBIENCE after conversion. We reported on the turbulent developments on this cruise liner.

Built in 1999 as MISTRAL by the Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the AIDAmira is 216 meters long and measured at 48,123 gross tons. AIDA had taken over the liner 2109 from Costa, but had had no luck with the ship. After a bumpy start (we reported), the ship was only in service for a few months until the outbreak of the corona pandemic at the beginning of 2020.

AIDAcosma in Hamburg

Taufe am 9. April 2022 in Hamburg.

April 2022 in Hamburg stattfinden.

AIDAcosma delivered

On December 21, 2021, AIDA Cruises took delivery of their second Helios class ship (also Excel class), the AIDAcosma (IMO 9781877). The cruise ship, measured 183,858 gross tons, is 337 meters long and has a passenger capacity of approx. 6,600 passengers in 2,732 cabins.

The AIDAcosma is already the sixth ship of this class that the Carnival Group has taken over from the Meyer shipyards in Papenburg and Turku. Three more ships in this series, which are characterized by an innovative LNG drive, are to follow by 2023.

AIDAcosma is to be put into service in the first quarter of 2022 and will be deployed for 7-day cruises on the metropolitan route from Hamburg. The christening of the cruise ship is to take place on April 9, 2022 in Hamburg. Godmother will be the former cyclist and two-time Olympic champion Kristina Vogel.

AIDAcosma

AIDAcosma: Completion significantly delayed.

Maiden voyage in December will not take place as planned

The AIDAcosma will not be completed by December as planned. This means that the maiden voyage planned for the end of December cannot take place. The voyages to be carried out by AIDAcosma will instead be taken over by the sister ship AIDAnova (which even was not completed on time three years ago). Since the AIDAnova will be spending the coming winter season in the Canary Islands, the AIDAbella will be used for the Orient cruises that were originally intended to be carried out by the AIDAnova.

Before the AIDAnova starts her Christmas and New Year’s Eve cruise from Hamburg on December 22nd, she is going to  undertake two short cruises from Hamburg on December 14th and 19th, which have been added to the program at short notice.

The AIDAcosma, which was floated a few weeks ago at Meyer yard, is now waiting in Papenburg for the river Ems transit to the North Sea.

Ausdocken und Auslaufen – Die Wochenend-Highlights auf deutschen Werften

Crystal Endeavor + AIDAcosma

The weekend highlights on German shipyards

Milestones in Papenburg and Stralsund

The past weekend had two major highlights for cruise ship building in Germany:

On Saturday, July 10th, the AIDAcosma (IMO 9781877) was floaeted out from the construction hall at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg and moved to the equipment pier – always an important milestone for the shipbuilders in Papenburg. The river Ems transit is scheduled to take place in October and the maiden voyage will start in Hamburg on December 22nd, if all goes well.

The second highlight of the weekend was the final departure of the CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR (IMO 9821873) from the MV shipyards in Stralsund. The handover to the shipping company and the christening by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig took place on June 26th. The CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR will soon be on her way to Iceland.

AIDA selling their AIDAcara

According to media reports, AIDA Cruises have sold their AIDAcara! She is the oldest ship in the AIDA fleet and therefore also the cruise ship with which the AIDA concept was started. Who the buyer is has not yet been revealed. The sale goes hand in hand with further fleet changes at AIDA.

Vor 25 Jahren: Taufe des ersten AIDA-Kreuzfahrtschiffs

AIDAcara

25 years ago: The first AIDA cruise ship was christened

AIDAcara’s anniversary

On June 7, 1996, the first AIDA cruise ship was christened in Rostock-Warnemünde. The name of the ship at the time was simply AIDA. This name continued the tradition of Deutsche Seereederei naming their cruise ships with an „A“ at the beginning and at the end (ARKONA, ASTRA II). AIDA Cruises didn’t even exist at that time.

The AIDA, which was built in Turku, Finland, was the first cruise ship with a hull artwork of a  kissable mouth and eyes, which has been retained on all AIDA ships to this day.

On June 11, 1996, the AIDA left for her first cruise to Palma de Mallorca.

It took a few years before the club ship concept also became an economic success. The name of the company was derived from the name of the ship: AIDA Cruises. The AIDA was renamed AIDAcara and got two bigger sisters with AIDAaura and AIDAvita.

AIDA Cruises was established on the cruise market under the umbrella of the Carnival Corporation and has since become one of the most important players on the German travel market.
