Aus PACIFIC DAWN / SATOSHI wird die AMBIENCE

AMBIENCE ex SATOSHI ex PACIFIC DAWN

Neue britische Cruise Line: Ambassador Cruise Line

Dabei will man das Schiff umwelttechnisch nachrüsten lassen.

New British Cruise Line: Ambassador Cruise Line

With the Ambassador Cruise Line, a new British company wants to establish itself on the cruise market. The first ship to be acquired is the former PACIFIC DAWN / SATOSHI, which is scheduled to set sail for the new company from April 2022. The ship’s new name will be AMBIENCE.

The cruise program

Ambassador Cruise Line’s cruise program is aimed primarily at the target group of people over 50. Cruises are to be offered from British ports, means no-fly cruises. The first trip will be a short cruise to Hamburg. Then it continues with a mixed cruise program. This includes trips to the Norwegian fjords and the British Isles. In the winter months, expedition-like cruises to the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, Cuba, the Caribbean and Scandinavia are to be offered.

Traditional ships and sustainability

Ambassador Cruise Lines, who were able to win over experienced managers from Cruise & Maritime Voyages, have set themselves the goal of bringing back the joy of cruising on ships that still look like them, without losing sight of the environment. They ae going to have the ship retrofitted in terms of environmental technology.

The ship’s eventful recent history

The future AMBIENCE, the former PACIFIC DAWN from P&O Cruises Australia ex REGAL PRINCESS (IMO 8521232) has had a little odyssey in the past few months. Actually, Cruise & Maritime Voyages wanted to buy the cruise ship and rename her AMY JOHNSON. But as a result of the pandemic, CMV went bankrupt. P&O Australia surprisingly found a new buyer in Ocean Builders. They renamed the ship SATOSHI and wanted to turn her into a community ship that was to lie off the coast of Panama. However, the company ran into problems, so the plans were abandoned. The scrapping of the liner seemed inevitable.

In March 2021, however, the cruise liner unexpectedly arrived in Bar in Montenegro, which gave rise to the hope that a new operator could still be found for the cruise ship. Now, with Ambassador Cruise Lines, a newcomer is taking over the liner.

Satoshi

What will happen to the SATOSHI ex PACIFIC DAWN?

Saved from scrapping?

Put into service as REGAL PRINCESS (IMO 8521232) in 1991, the cruise liner sailed for P&O Cruises Australia for many years under the name PACIFIC DAWN. In 2020 it was announced that Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) wanted to acquire the PACIFIC DAWN, in order to continue to employ her as AMY JOHNSON. The takeover should have taken place in 2021. But nothing came of it, because CMV went into bankruptcy in 2020 as a result of the corona pandemic.

In the course of 2020, P&O Australia surprisingly found a new buyer for their Cruise Liner: Ocean Builders. The company had unusual plans for the liner: the cruise ship was to be converted into a community ship and permanently anchored off the coast of Panama under the name SATOSHI. The cabins on board should have come up for auction. The on-board currency should have been Bitcoin.

But even these plans came to nothing because, according to the operator company, no P&I club could be found that wanted to insure the ship. This seemed to have sealed the fate of the cruise ship, and it was threatened with the voyages to the scrapping yard.

A few weeks ago the SATOSHI sailed from Panama on her voyage towards the Mediterranean. But she did not go to a Turkish scrap yard, but to Bari in Montenegro. The SATOSHI arrived there on March 27, 2021. This indicates that a buyer could have been found who wants to continue operating the ship. For the time being, however, the SATOSHI will be laid up in Bari.

Good-bye! Die COLUMBUS unterwegs nach Alang / Indien!

Cruise Liner COLUMBUS

Good-bye! The COLUMBUS on her way to Alang / India!

Another cruise liner to be scrapped

The cruise liner COLUMBUS recently left Greece and is now heading to Alang in India. It will be the last voyage for this cruise ship. Built in 1988/89 by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France and commissioned as STAR PRINCESS, the cruise ship sailed for the British Cruise & Maritime Voyages until the outbreak of the corona pandemic. With the pandemic came the end for CMV. The COLUMBUS appeared to have escaped scrapping with the auction. But now this more than 30 year old liner will also end on the beach in Alang.

Nicko Cruises to operate VASCO DA GAMA in Northern Europe

Nicko Cruises, a subsidiary of the Portuguese Mystic Invest, intend to operate the VASCO DA GAMA on the German market this year. Mystic acquired the Cruise Liner at auction from CMV last year.

The starting ports are to be Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Kiel. Voyages to the Baltic Sea, the North Cape, but also to the British Isles are planned. The trips are planned for the period between May and September, of course all subject to the development of the corona pandemic.

M/V COLUMBUS

Kreuzfahrtschiffs-Verschrottungen gehen weiter

Another one bites the dust: COLUMBUS

Cruise ship scrapping continues

The COLUMBUS is the next cruise ship that will soon be brought to the scrapping yard. Last year, shipping circles reported that the Greek company Seajets had bought the COLUMBUS (IMO 8611398). She has been laid up in Greece since December 2020. But now she is being prepared for her final voyage to the scrapping yard in Aliaga, Turkey. The Cruise Liner was built in 1988/1989 by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France. The original client was Sitmar. When that shipping company was taken over by P&O Princess Cruises, the ship was renamed STAR PRINCESS. After several name changes, the Cruise Liner last operated for the British Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which, however, went bankrupt in 2020 as a result of the corona pandemic

Nächstes Schiff zur Verschrottung: die MAGELLAN

Magellan

Gebaut in Aalborg, verschrottet in Alang

Next ship to be scrapped: the MAGELLAN

The scrapping of older cruise ships continues to pick up speed. After various older cruise ships landed on scrap yards in 2020, things will continue this year. Even ships believed to have been rescued are landing on the beaches of the scrapping yards. This is what just recently happened to the classic liner MARCO POLO. She is now followed by the MAGELLAN (IMO 8217881). It had initially been said that the cruise ship had been acquired by the Greek Seajets after the insolvency of CMV Cruise & Maritime Voyages, but this obviously turned out to be wrong. Several insider reports suggest that the cruise liner, which is currently on anchorage off the coast of Oman, will shortly begin her last voyage to Alang.

Constructed in Aalborg, scrapped in Alang

After the ASTOR and MARCO POLO, the MAGELLAN is the third CMV ship to be scrapped. She follows her sister GRAND CELEBRATION ex CELEBRATION, which has just arrived in Alang. The MAGELLAN was built from 1983 to 1985 as HOLIDAY on the Danish Aalborg Værft. She was the first of three HOLIDAY class ships. When she is scrapped, the last remaining ship of this class will disappear. The HENNA (IMO 8314122) built as a JUBILEE was scrapped in Alang already in 2017. The former HOLIDAY and the former CELEBRATION will now be dismantled almost simultaneously in Alang.

ASTOR auf Strand gesetzt – Rettungsversuche gescheitert

Astor in Aliaga

Rettungsversuch in letzter Minute

ASTOR beached –  Last minute rescue attempts failed

On Monday, November 23rd, the ASTOR (IMO 8506373), built in 1986 at HDW in Kiel, was beached in Aliaga, Turkey. This started the demolition work.

Before that, some enthusiasts tried to find investors and to raise the money to buy the ship from the Turkish demolition company. 2 to 3 million euros should have been raised for a rescue. The Turkish breakers had previously acquired the ASTOR for 1.7 million Euros. On Monday afternoon, however, the deadline that the demolition company had granted to acquire the ASTOR had passed.

A morsel of comfort remains: The first ASTOR (IMO 8000214), last sailing as SAGA PEARL II, is still existing, even though laid up in Greece for already more than  a year

1,7 Mill. Euro Auktionspreis erzielt

1.7 million euros auction price achieved

At the auction of ASTOR in the course of the bankruptcy of the British Cruise & Maritime Voyages, a sales price of only 1.7 million euros was achieved. According to unconfirmed reports, the ASTOR will be scrapped.

The ASTOR (IMO 8506373) was built in 1987 at HDW in Kiel for Safmarine. She was the somewhat larger successor ship of the first ASTOR (IMO 8000214), which became known in Germany as a TV Dream Ship. The first ASTOR, the “Dream Ship”, was built in 1980 at HDW in Hamburg for HADAG Cruise Lines. She is now the SAGA PEARL II and is supposed to be converted into a mega-yacht in Greece.

Greek shipping company continues on its shopping spree

As reported, the Greek ferry service operator Seajets had acquired several cruise ships in the past weeks and months and thus used the opportunity in the pandemic.

Recent reports say that Seajets has now even secured COLUMBUS and MAGELLAN, which were up for auction following the bankruptcy of Cruise & Maritime Voyages. Meanwhile, it is still unclear what specific plans Seajets are pursuing with the ships. Seajets had not yet appeared as a cruise line

Mystic Invest has bought VASCO DA GAMA at auction

Mystic Invest, owner of the cruise lines Atlas Ocean Voyages and Nicko Cruises, has bought VASCO DA GAMA  (IMO 8919245)  from CMV Cruise & Maritime Voyages. CMV had to file for bankruptcy a few months ago. That is why their cruise ships are being sold by auction.

Up to now, Mystic is the owner of the ocean-going cruise ships WORLD EXPLORER and WORLD VOYAGER (the latter not yet put into service). The VASCO DA GAMA, which has now been auctioned, will be the largest ship in the Mystic fleet. Mystic will probably use them for the British and German cruise market – just like CMV before.

The Cruise Liner was built by Fincantieri as STATENDAM for Holland America Line from 1991 to 1993.

The VASCO DA GAMA received high attention in March this year due to a never before seen ship to ship passenger swap on the high seas.

CMV gehen in die Insolvenz

Magellan

CMV placed into administration

The British cruise company Cruise & Maritime Voyages has been placed into administration. The German brand TansOcean is also affected. A rescue financing that has been negotiated until recently has burst.

The CMV fleet includes the cruise ships ASTORIA, ASTOR, VASCO DA GAMA, COLUMBUS, MAGELLAN and MARCO POLO. With the PACIFIC DREAM and the PACIFIC ARIA, CMV even intended to take over two ships from P&O Australia in 2021.

Not only is the future of Cruise & Maritime Voyages uncertain, but so is the fate of these ships, especially that of the older units.

From cruise directly into quarantine on desert island

Quarantine on the „Rat Nest Island“

The passengers of VASCO DA GAMA operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages had certainly not imagined their cruise developping like this. For about 800 Australian passengers, the cruise ends with a 14-day quarantine on Rottnest Island („Rat Nest Island“). They recently already experienced an adventure at sea!

From one adventure to the next!

VASCO DA GAMA originally sailed from Fremantle, Australia for a cruise to the UK. About a week ago, VASCO DA GAMA carried out an unprecedented passenger exchange with the COLUMBUS, also operated by CMV, on the high seas. We reported. VASCO DA GAMA took over Australian passengers from the COLUMBUS and handed over British passengers to COLUMBUS. The VASCO DA GAMA then made her way back to Fremantle on the Australian west coast.

Quarantine on the island

VASCO DA GAMA arrived in Fremantle on March 27th. But the passengers are not allowed to go straight home, as promised before.

While the 150 non-Australian passengers and the crew have to stay on board, the approximately 800 Australians are to be quarantined on Rottnest Island off the west Australian coast. However, it is not as cruel as the name „Rat Nest Island“ sounds. The discoverer of the island, the Dutch captain Willem de Vlamingh, had mistakenly thought that the quokkas (small kangaroos) living there were large rats.

The approximately 11-kilometer-long, car-free island can instead be viewed as a holiday paradise. However, the details of the quarantine have not yet been finally clarified. What should happen to the approximately 300 islanders? The accommodation and supply of passengers from VASCO DA GAMA on the island is said to be ensured, the Australian government said. Accommodation options are available on the holiday island. The island’s guests, who were on Rottnest Island until recently, had already been asked to leave the island.

CMV feel surprised

The cruise company CMV was nevertheless disappointed with the government’s instructions. They had previously received a permit to call at Fremantle and had only heard about the new decision via the press. In addition, there is said to be no illnesses on board the VASCO DA GAMA.

The cruise ship is instructed to anchor off the coast until a decision has been made to return the remaining passengers.

In Miami liegen derzeit insgesamt acht Cruise Liner.

Royal Caribbean haben einige Schiffe auf Reede vor Coco Cay liegen (AVENTURE OF THE SEAS, ANTHEM OF THE SEAS, HAMRONY OF THE SEAS, OASIS OF THE SEAS) und weitere Schiffe in US-Häfen, teilweise auch vor den Häfen auf Reede: Tampa, Galveston, Miami, Port Everglades, zwei Schiffe darüber hinaus in Sydney, Australien.

Where the cruise ships lie

Almost the entire global fleet of cruise ships has currently suspended operation, only a few ships are still on the way to complete their last trip for the time being – a scenario that until recently seemed completely unthinkable. It is not even foreseeable how long this condition will have to continue.

Here are a few examples to show where the cruise ships are currently located.

The ships of the Carnival Cruise Line are distributed on the one hand to various US ports such as Miami, Port Canaveral, New Orleans, Mobile, Long Beach, Jacksonville, Tampa, …, but also on the Bahamas, namely three ships.

Princess Cruises as well have several ships on anchorage in the Bahamas.

CMV Cruise & Maritime Voyages had ordered almost all ships back to Great Britain, namely to Tilbury and Avonmouth, with the exception of the ASTOR, which is due to come to Bremerhaven.

TUI Cruises and AIDA have their ships a little spread out in Spanish and German ports.

MSC Cruises has moored several cruise liners in Miami and one off the coast of Miami. There are currently eight cruise liners in Miami.

Royal Caribbean has a number of ships on anchorage off Coco Cay (AVENTURE OF THE SEAS, ANTHEM OF THE SEAS, HAMRONY OF THE SEAS, OASIS OF THE SEAS) and other ships in US ports, some of them also off the ports on anchorage: Tampa, Galveston, Miami, Port Everglades, two ships off Sydney, Australia.

The smaller Celestyal Cruises ships are located in Piraeus.

P&O will moor all cruise ships in the UK after completing their voyages, namely in Dover, Southampton and Portland.

The situation is similar with Cunard, who bring their ships back to the UK with the exception of the QUEEN ELIZABETH, which is on anchorage off Australia.
